Regional Manager: Mbulelo Simon Peterson
Mbulelo Simon Peterson is SANRAL’s Southern Regional Manager.
He was born and raised in the Eastern Cape. He matriculated from Kuyasa High School, located in King Williams Town. Thereafter he completed his first BSc degree from the University of Zululand in 1987. He later completed another BSc degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Cape Town in 1992.
From August 1994 until February 1996, he worked as an Assistant Resident Engineer at VKE Consulting Engineers at Kidds Beach. He also completed his MBA from Heriot Watt University in Scotland in 1996. Immediately after graduating with his MBA, he worked as the Assistant Resident Engineer (Professional Engineer) for PA Construction Unit in Grahamstown between February 1996 to September 1998.
He worked as the Deputy Chief Engineer/Office-in-Charge at the National Department of Public Works in East London from October 1998 to January 2000. From February 2000 to March 2001 he worked as the Deputy Chief Engineer (Project Management) for the National Department of Public Works (Port Elizabeth). He was the Regional Director for the Department of Roads and Public Works in Kokstad from April 2001 to March 2002 before occupiying the position of Director of Roads Construction for Roads and Public Works in Bisho.
Peterson has a passion for community development, road safety and the development of young civil engineer graduates. In 2003 he initiated the first Learnership Programme for the Eastern Cape government, while working for Roads and Public Works. In 2004 he initiated the first EPWP project for the Eastern Cape government in Jansenville/Klipplaat.
He attended a project management conference in Australia in October 2000. The primary objective of the conference was to examine the role of project management in the 21st century. He attended an infrastructure conference in India in February 2003 where the primary objective of the conference was to examine the role international companies and public private partnerships play in the delivery of infrastructure in India.
From 13 August 1999 to September 1999 he attended a project manager course in Sweden. This trip was sponsored by SIDA on behalf of the Swedish Government. The primary objective of the course was to strengthen the participants’ capacity to guide a project to a successful conclusion. From 19 September 197 to 15 October 1997 he visited Britain, France, Belgium and Spain. The aim of the trip was to learn about the latest construction machinery and equipment that is available on the overseas market. was to examine the role international companies and public private partnerships play in the delivery of infrastructure in India.

Major Projects

N2 Wild Coast Road

SANRAL’s multi-billion-rand N2 Wild Coast Road (N2WCR) Project is one of the Agency’s most ambitious yet. It stretches 410km from the Gonubie Interchange in East London to the Mtamvuna River near Port Edward. The N2 connects four provinces–Western Cape, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga–traversing the cities and towns of Cape Town, George, Knysna, Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), East London, Mthatha, Durban and Ermelo.

Mtentu Bridge

The Mtentu Bridge is a multi-span box girder bridge currently under construction, spanning the Mtentu River near Lundini in the Eastern Cape. The Bridge forms part of the N2 Wild Coast road (N2WC) project, which aims to improve the travel time between Durban and East London for heavy freight vehicles.

R390 Between Cradock & Hofmeyr Project

The project commences at km 0.00 in Cradock (Inxuba Yetemba Local Municipality) at the four-legged intersection between Albert Street (N10) and Stockenstroom Street and terminates at km 62.50 (R401/ Voortrekker Street) in Hofmeyr (Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality).

Msikaba Bridge

The construction of the Msikaba Bridge in the Eastern Cape is a collaborative process that is led by SANRAL, the Department of Transport, local communities,SMMEs and CME Joint Venture. The 580m span, 195m high, R1.65 billion cable stay bridge is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.
