SANRAL UPDATE ON NATIONAL ROADS AFFECTED BY LIMPOPO PROVINCE HEAVY RAINS AND FLOODS
Limpopo, 23 January 2026 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) wishes to give road users an update of national roads that have been affected by heavy rains and flooding in Mpumalanga Province. Several national roads were damaged by heavy rains and flooding following persistent adverse weather conditions in in the province.
The recent update on the affected national roads is as follows:
The following national roads are still closed to traffic:
- National Road R40 between Mica and Phalaborwa (alternative roads – R526 from Mica to Gravelotte and R71 from Gravelotte to Phalaborwa).
- R578 (D3260 & D3980) between Makhuva and Phalaborwa (alternative roads – R71 from Phalaborwa to Tzaneen and R36 from Tzaneen to Mooketsi and R81 to Giyani).
- R529 between Dzumeri village and Giyani – there is a temporary Bypass through the Dzumeri Village.
The following national road is partially open to traffic with Traffic Accommodation Operation in place to direct traffic:
- R524 from Matiyani to Punda Maria Gate.
SANRAL has commenced with assessments on all affected routes to determine the extent of damage that will inform what repair interventions will be implemented.
“Road users are strongly advised to avoid all affected areas and to use alternative routes where possible. SANRAL’s Routine Road Maintenance (RRM) teams remain on high alert and are conducting ongoing assessments to determine the extent of the impact on the national road network.”
“Those travelling on routes affected by persistent rainfall are urged to exercise extreme caution, reduce speed and maintain safe following distances. Further communication will be issued as assessments continue and once it is confirmed that conditions are safe for the re-opening of affected national roads,” said Madoda Mthembu, SANRAL Limpopo’s Provincial Head.
